How can we help you?

What should I do if I have received a fine?

Does the inspection staff of De Lijn detect a violation? Then they will ask for your identity card and issue a digital fine report.

The Fines Department will send you a fine called a 'proposal for decision' within 14 days after this detection.

You will receive the fine:

  • Digitally in your active eBox, if you are an adult offender and we have your national registry number. If you are a minor offender, your parent/guardian will receive the fine digitally in his/her active eBox if we have their national registry number.
    Or
  • By registered mail, if we do not have the national registry number. The letter will be sent to the official address of the adult offender or, in the case of a minor offender, to the official address of the parent/guardian.

The fine includes:

  • A copy of the issued fine report.
  • How you can pay.
  • The period within which you must pay (30 days).
  • How you can request a payment plan.
  • How you can appeal to the Administrative Fines department.

If you agree with this proposal for decision, you pay the fine. The case is then closed.

If you do not agree with the proposal for decision, you can appeal against it here.

When a minor passenger receives a fine report, in addition to the parents/guardian, the minor themselves also receives a letter. This is an identical letter sent by regular mail to the minor themselves.
